President and CEO
Grant Wicklund is president and chief executive officer of Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
Grant has more than 25 years of senior-level health care experience. He has worked as a senior corporate executive with broad staff and line responsibility in both tax-exempt and for-profit hospital systems and corporate entities. Grant has significant experience as both a leader and a consultant for health care organizations concerning opportunities in operations, business development, logistics, productivity, cost reduction and labor strategies.
Prior to joining Exempla, Grant served as interim president and CEO of St. Francis Health Center, an SCL Health System hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He also served as senior vice president of Centura Health in Colorado, with 12 acute care hospitals, seven senior living residences, and numerous surgery centers and joint ventures. Grant was responsible for human resources, supply chain and purchasing, and all laboratory functions for Centura.
He has served on the board of directors of nine different hospitals, three independent surgery centers and two physician group practices, as well as numerous charitable organizations and one family foundation. Grant currently serves on the board of the American Heart Association (AHA) and is the chair of the 2014 AHA Denver Heart Ball. He also is a member of the Jefferson County Economic Development Council, the West Chamber, the Lutheran Legacy Fund Community Advisory Board and the Exempla Lutheran Medical Center Foundation Board.
The Denver Business Journal recognized Grant as one of the 10 top newsmakers in healthcare in the Denver Business Journal’s Power Book 2013.
Grant received his Bachelor of Science and arts degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.
Peggy Cain Price, RN, MA
Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
As Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Peggy Cain Price is responsible for day-to-day operations for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. In addition, her areas of executive responsibility include the clinical service lines of Cancer Services & Collier Hospice, Orthopedic (HMI) Services, West Pines Behavioral Health Services, Colorado Lutheran Home, as well as Imaging Services, Laboratory & Pathology Services, Bridges Integrative Health & Wellness, Sleep Disorders Services, Volunteers & Guest Services, and Marketing.
Peggy is an experienced health care executive and consultant with over 35 years of health care leadership and nursing practice. Before joining Exempla, she served as the President and CEO of North Suburban Medical Center and as COO from 1996 to 2004. Prior to that, she served as Vice President, Patient Care Services and CNO of Aurora Medical Center from 1985 to 1994. Peggy practiced as a nurse at Denver Health and University of Colorado Hospital, and at Roswell Park Memorial in Buffalo, New York.
Peggy received a Master of Arts in Health Services Management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from D'Youville College in Buffalo, New York.
Peggy currently serves on the board of the Rocky Mountain Youth Clinic.
Christina Johnson, MD, FACEP
Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
As Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Dr. Christina (Tina) Johnson oversees Patient Safety, Quality & Performance Improvement, Community Physician Recruitment & Retention, Hospitalist Services, Care Management, Cardiology Services and Clinical Informatics. Dr. Johnson joined Exempla Lutheran Medical Center as Attending Physician, Emergency Department in 1998 and has extensive knowledge of the hospital and community. Prior to assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Johnson served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department and held multiple ED positions. She served as Chair of the ED from 2007 to 2008; Vice Chair from 2005 to 2007; and Associate Medical Director in 2007 and 2008. Dr. Johnson has also been an Attending Physician, ED at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center.
Dr. Johnson brings strong leadership skills and abilities to the role of CMO. She participated in the Emergency Department Directors Academy of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Johnson has served on and led numerous medical staff committees and clinical improvement programs; she has also served on the Medical Executive Committee and the Clinical Operations Council. She has completed the Advanced Training Program in Health Care Delivery Improvement at Intermountain Health.
Dr. Johnson received her bachelor's degree from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She earned her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine and completed residency training at the Denver Affiliated Program in Emergency Medicine. She also completed Internal Medicine residency training at the University of California, San Francisco and was board certified in Internal Medicine. In 2009, she was named a 5280 Top Doctor in Emergency Medicine.
Geri Towndrow, RN, BSN, MA,
Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer
As Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Geri Towndrow is a champion for patient care and nursing practice, she brings a wealth of national experience and knowledge to the role. In addition, her areas of executive responsibility include the clinical service lines of Critical Care, Emergency &Trauma Services, Women's & Newborn Services, Neuro Services, Cardiovascular Services & Acute Care, Med Surgical Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, and Learning & Development.
Geri served as interim VP and CNO for more than a year and joined our team in January 2013. Her skill and vision will help lead us to a successful future in all clinical areas. She has more than 30 years of nursing leadership experience, working to build positive staff and physician relationships and improving quality and patient satisfaction.
Geri received her MA in Organizational Management from Webster University in Colorado Springs, CO and her BS in Nursing from Regis University in Denver, CO
Vice President, Finance
As the Vice President of Finance, Karen Scremin is responsible for all aspects of financial management. Karen supervises the operating and capital budgets for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and oversees site management scorecard reporting. Karen is involved in key managed care contracting decisions, strategic planning, marketing plans, business development, pay practice decisions, purchase service contracts and cost analysis efforts for ELMC.
Karen is a fi nancial health care veteran who brings with her over 15 years of experience in fi nancial management and operations of hospitals and other related entities, as well as public accounting experience. Most recently, her expertise was employed in Mesa, Arizona, where she was the Chief Financial Offi cer for two facilities within the non-profi t Banner Health System: Banner Baywood Medical Center, a 246-bed acute care general hospital; and Banner Baywood Heart Hospital, a 111-bed heart hospital. As CFO, Karen had executive responsibility for fi scal operations, overseeing all aspects of fi nancial planning, budgeting, and day-to-day operations. Prior to this position, Karen managed fi nance for Lutheran Health Network for fi ve years, and before that, provided auditing services to a large accounting firm.
Karen received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at the University of Nebraska; Lincoln and has been a past board member of Boys and Girls Club Auxiliary; Compadre Branch, Chandler Arizona and past member of Lutheran Health Network Grants Committee.
Scott Day, PHR
Vice President, Human Resources
Scott Day joined Exempla Healthcare in 1996 and has worked throughout the Exempla system for Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla Physician Network. Scott serves as the Vice President of Human Resources for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and is responsible for participating in the design of and delivery of human resource products and services to the employees.
Scott is involved with other departments in a number of projects that will help Exempla make a difference in the lives of our patients.
Scott received his bachelor's degree in industrial psychology at Metropolitan State College and continued his education at Webster University where he received his master's degree in human resource administration.
Scott is currently serving a third term on the Work Force Investment Board for Jefferson County.
Jeanne McGinnis, RN, BSN, MAS
Vice President Physician Services & Business Development
Jeanne McGinnis rejoined Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in 2005. In her current role, she fosters positive relationships among community physicians and services, hospital medical staff, care site associates and leaders throughout the SCL system to advance competitive opportunities and cost effective patient access. Jeanne previously contributed to the opening of Exempla West Pines Behavioral Health in 1988.
With more than 30 years in healthcare leadership in both public and private settings, Jeanne’s interests have long been to innovate and integrate the best, most cost-effective clinical services in response to shifting needs and expectations in the community, while also advocating for the professionals providing care.
Originally from New York, Jeanne received her nursing bachelors’ degree from the University of Iowa and masters in administrative science from Johns Hopkins University. She moved to Colorado in the 1980s.
Jeanne has been an active volunteer, notably until recently with the Colorado State Board of Public Health and Environment for 15 years, during which she served two years as President of the Board.
Jennifer Wrona, MBA
Vice President, Strategic Growth
As Vice President for Strategic Growth, Wrona leverages her background in hospital service line strategy, development and growth to focus on helping shape and grow volume in Lutheran's existing high-quality service lines. Her responsibilities include identifying new opportunities and developing strategies and tactics to build and grow them. She also plays a key role in developing the hospital's overall strategic plan, keeping it aligned with the frequent changes in health care delivery today.
Wrona brings strong skills and experience in strategic planning and analysis and in bringing these plans to successful fruition in challenging markets, with a focus on areas such as surgery, neurosciences, behavioral health and orthopedics and spine.
Wrona has served at a previous organization as assistant vice president of Neurosciences, providing strategic planning and service line and program development. She also has held leadership roles at other local hospitals and health care organizations. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Cleveland State University and earned her MBA from Colorado State University. Wrona is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Colorado Healthcare Association. She has extensive volunteer experience, having served, among others, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and Habitat for Humanity.
Carol Salzmann, RN
Vice President, Community Development; Executive Director, Lutheran Medical Center Foundation
As Executive Director for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center Foundation, Carol Salzmann is responsible for raising funds to support Exempla Lutheran Medical Center including the hospital, Exempla Lutheran Hospice, Exempla Colorado Lutheran Home and Exempla West Pines and Recovery Center. With over thirty years of health care leadership and practice experience, her responsibilities include foundation operations and management, as well as all donor relations and fund-raising activities.
In Carol’s role as Vice President Community Development at Lutheran, she stewards business community, government and civic partnerships focused on community health improvement. In her earlier career, she was a nursing specialist and critical care nurse, director Marketing and Communications for Exempla and a nurse consultant for Health Management Inc. Carol attended the University of Nebraska and graduated in Nursing from Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing where she continued to practice before joining Lutheran Medical Center in 1978.
Carol is a member of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy and serves on Congressman Perlmutter’s Healthcare Advisory Board and the LiveWell Wheat Ridge Leadership Council. She has been a past member of the VHA and CHA Joint Community Benefit National Steering Committee, Jefferson County Workforce Investment Board, Red Rocks Community College Foundation Board and Wheat Ridge 2020 Board.
